A Long-Planned Trip Down Under
The Melbourne game had been on the calendar for more than a year. The NFL first named the Rams as the designated team in early 2025, then confirmed the 49ers as the opponent in February 2026, slotting the matchup into a record nine international games across four continents. The MCG, which seats roughly 100,000 and is one of the largest stadiums in the world, hosted its first NFL contest after decades as the spiritual home of Australian sport. The buildup carried real stakes beyond the novelty. The Rams entered 2026 as popular Super Bowl picks after trading for Defensive Player of the Year Myles Garrett and welcoming Aaron Donald back from retirement, while the 49ers arrived with Brock Purdy, Christian McCaffrey and a defense rebuilt under coordinator Raheem Morris. One preparation decision loomed over everything: San Francisco flew in a week early to acclimate, while Los Angeles landed roughly 28 hours before kickoff. 
49ers Pull Away After a Slow Start
Both teams looked sluggish for the morning kickoff, combining for three punts on their first four possessions. San Francisco managed a field goal for a 3-0 first-quarter lead before the Rams struck first for a touchdown: Kyren Williams punched in a 5-yard run early in the second quarter — the first NFL touchdown ever scored in Australia — to put Los Angeles ahead 7-3. The momentum did not last. The quarterbacks traded interceptions, then Purdy shook off a shaky start and found former Rams receiver Demarcus Robinson on a 39-yard touchdown to send the 49ers into halftime up 10-7. San Francisco surged out of the break behind Deebo Samuel’s 45-yard kickoff return, capping the drive with a 2-yard Purdy-to-Mike Evans touchdown for a 17-7 lead. The defining sequence came late in the third quarter. The Rams drove inside the San Francisco 1-yard line, but after Puka Nacua was ruled down just short of the goal line, the 49ers stuffed Matthew Stafford on a fourth-down quarterback sneak. San Francisco answered with an 11-play, 99-yard march that ended in Purdy’s 15-yard scoring pass to Samuel for a 24-7 cushion early in the fourth. A Fred Warner forced fumble and an Eddy Pineiro 56-yard field goal closed out the 27-7 final.
Efficient Purdy, Stifled Stafford
Purdy did not need a huge yardage night to control the game. He finished 25 of 34 for 205 yards with three touchdowns and one interception, good for a 105.6 passer rating, and added 29 rushing yards on five carries. San Francisco totaled 379 yards — 205 passing and 174 rushing — while surrendering zero sacks and committing just one turnover. The running game did the heavy lifting: Christian McCaffrey ran for 68 yards on 10 carries and rookie Kaelon Black added 65 yards on 14 carries in his NFL debut. Evans, in his first game as a 49er, caught six passes and scored, while Samuel — back in San Francisco after spending 2025 with the Washington Commanders — delivered the kickoff return and the game-sealing touchdown. The story on the other side was the 49ers’ defense. Morris’s unit held Stafford, the reigning NFL MVP, to 15 of 25 for 155 yards with an interception and limited the Rams to 290 total yards and their lone score. Nacua led Los Angeles with 74 receiving yards, but the offense never found rhythm and Stafford was pulled late in the blowout. Garrett, meanwhile, finished tackle-less in a quiet Rams debut. 
What They Said
Rams head coach Sean McVay did not hide from the result. “They outplayed us in every facet,” McVay said, adding, “I didn’t do nearly a good enough job.” Asked about arriving so late in the week, he stood by the call: he said he did not believe the travel plan was why his team played poorly and that he would always make the decisions he thought were best for the team. The 49ers embraced the trip. “It was definitely worth it to come a little bit early,” Evans said. “We definitely got acclimated… We actually enjoyed being here in Melbourne.” Stafford, for his part, was blunt about the offense: he estimated the Rams had “probably only two good drives” and said the breakdown started with him.

For the NFL, the Melbourne debut delivered a record crowd and a global showcase even if it lacked competitive balance, giving the league plenty to weigh as it evaluates future games in Australia under its multiyear commitment. For the teams, the schedule turns quickly: the 49ers return home to host the Miami Dolphins on Sunday, September 20, while the Rams host the New York Giants on Monday, September 21, looking to bury a rare double-digit loss — their first defeat by more than seven points since November 2024.
